At Zillow, homeowners have different finance needs than home shoppers.  So I collaborated on a project with my UX designer for Hack Week to meet the unique finance needs of home owners. Not only did we win Hack Week, but our project was also shipped.

This home finance module replaced our old refinance calculator, which was pretty basic. It didn't address the users' goals and it didn't help them understand whether refinancing was a good idea or not.  Our new version allowed users to search by their specific goal (i.e. saving monthly on her mortgage, paying less interest paying off loan faster, take cash out, or stop paying PMI). It then gave users information on whether or not refinancing would help them meet their goals.

Needless to say, this was a complex product with heavy content needs. Some of the unique challenges included incorporating required legal disclaimers and help text, and coming up with strings for all of the outputs for each path. For example, in the Stop Paying PMI flow, there were 16 different outputs, depending on when the user originated their loan, whether they had an FHA loan, what their current DTI is, what the current interest rate was compared to their original rate, and the amount of their original down payment.
